Lots of athletes wait until it becomes an issue before they seek help and support but the sooner you start the better. Training your body takes time, discipline and repetition, so does training your mind. Start early!
— Jason McKenzie

Words from the man himself:

I am a passionate Southlander, and New Zealander. I spent 10 year as a secondary school teacher, school counsellor and working in private practice as a counsellor. In the past fifteen years I have worked in High Performance sport in Athlete Life and Mental Skills roles (from talent development to elite) with a focus on wellbeing, personal development, and performance skills. I enjoy working with athletes to manage the pressures of life and performance.

Current roles

  • Manager of the Academy Southland Program

  • Mental Skills Coach and Athlete Life provider for HPSNZ working with the Steel based Silver Ferns

  • Mental Skills Coach and Personal Development manager for STAGs,

  • NZOC Psychology team for Tokyo 2020

Recent Roles

  • Mental Skills coach for Super Rugby Aotearoa referees

  • Mental Skills coach for Referees and Rugby World Cup 2019

  • NZOC Psychology role at Youth Olympics in 2018

Sports psychology is still relatively new to a lot of people, but more and more its importance and techniques are being recognised and absorbed. The brain is the top of the performance network, it’s the pilot system, it coordinates and makes everything work. Optimise the rational-thinking conscious-you for success.

This session will be talking place on the 18th of November at 7.45 at the champions room at the ILT stadium (up stairs above the velodrome).

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a goal, to book in, listen, learn and ask questions in a small and intimate workshop.

Limited to 15 places

Planting Natives with Southland Mountain Bike Club

Planting Natives with Southland Mountain Bike Club

Southland Mountain Bike Club contracted Cam Bissett from D&E contracting to tune up the DH track and they did an amazing job. Cam also cleared an area of gorse along the sides of the track. We went in with the club to start native replanting before the Gorse claims that land back.

The Dh side of the hill is dominated by Gorse. Gorse is an invasive species which if left unchecked will choke out native species for 15 - 60 years ish (depending on growing conditions and seed bank). If your interested in Gorse as a nursery canopy check out the Hinewai project in Christchurch. Some parts of Bluff hill we will have to wait that long but where we can we are going to give the native a helping hand.

Rabbits never were a problem at Bluff but since the pest control program headed up by The Motupohue Trust has been so successful there has been a fair few more poping up. As a result plant protectors for the edible plants is a must!

The base is biodegradable and protectors can be reused. With out them these plants get eaten quick.

Keep an eye on ours and Southland Mountain Bike Clubs Facebook page for for updates and the next planting day.

Huge thank you to Southland Mountain Bike Club for being so conservation focused, Invercargill City Council for providing the plants and protectors and the The Motupohue Environment Trust for their help and support.

Great to see Cycle fix out there also!

  • Marcus 5 hours

  • Jake 5 hours

  • Will 5 hours

  • Barney 5 hours

  • Mitch 3.5hours

  • Donald 3.5 hours

  • Steve 2.5 hours

  • Tahnee 2.5 hours

  • Craig 3.5 hours

  • Mathew 3.5 hours

  • Me - 5 hours

Between us there was a total of 71.5 hours. 2 quad bikes, a self loader and a whacker packer!

Special mention to Will Implemens director of Adventure Southland for his volunteer of the year nomination. Tough competition for this but Will stood out, sticking with the maintenance and going hard during lock down! The other main contender was Jake Bradshaw from Floorworks who put in a heroic effort and without his trail building eye and resourcefulness B Line wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t move nearly as much dirt.

Barney from Escape Glass also stepping in with his quad and trailer to make quick work of this surfacing.

Two Tyre Tracks with the machine hire and last but not least…

Crooks Quarry - These guys are absolute legends and the quality of the material they provide is outstanding!

Thanks to the Goldern Age Tavern - Best Poutine in Southland!

Do the work get the treats… Looks like there’s some sort of smack talk judging by Steve’s face.

Southland Mountain Bike Club Volunteers are working hard for your riding pleasure!

Theres some ambitions plans for both Bluff and Sandy Point trail networks. For Bluff the first point of call is making the existing network as resilient as possible and also mellowing out a few sections to keep the blue - blue! Hopefully more resilient trails will mean less maintenance next year and then we can start the development of new tracks !! Who doesn’t love a freshie!

Today my self and Marcus headed down to prep a section we knew needed drying out in preparation for surfacing next week.

2 people 2 hours.

The next Dig is Saturday the 15th of August, meeting at the XC carpark at 9.30, we will run till approx 2pm and then down to the Golden Age Tavern for a cheeky post dig pint and snacks!

Website: Southland Mountain Bike Club

The club survives on its volunteer work, money raised from running events, its membership and it’s sponsors. If your coming to ride please join the club and if you ride regularly come for a dig or if digging isn’t your thing/ don’t have time, please consider making a donation. The club needs materials and tools and there are sections of work the club will need to contract out to professional trail builders.

Hope you can make this Saturday, if not keep your eyes peeled on the Club website.

See you there!

Freeing up the pit

Freeing up the pit

JPJ was out with Southland Mountain Bike Club on Wednesday night clearing out the old gravel pit at Sandy Point. It was so good to have such a fantastic group come along and get stuck in.

The weekend before JPJ and Jake Bradshaw went in and rebuilt one of the old drops which had faded away over time to new two level drop and looked at the old pit and thought wouldn’t it be cool if…..

So Jake (Who is certified to cut on council land went to work chopping up the tree and we came back on Wed and cleared it all out. Because there was a few of us we it only took an hour so we went for a night spin after it. We were all surprised at how many rider there were out at night!

The Gravel pit is great little area to practice short steep rolls and there room for tonnes more drop progression and looks like a place that has become a bit under utilised. Hopefully opening it back up will allow local riders to experiment with a few more lines.

Looking forward to seeing how this evolves!

Night riding at Sandy Point is Ideal winter training. Sheltered warm, free draining soils !

Keep your eye peeled on on our FB page and Southland Mountain Bike Clubs for digs going up….

Invercargill Sandy Point Drop Progression

Invercargill Sandy Point Drop Progression

We have had a few of our riders asking about learning drops and we quickly realised there were not any particularly good practice drops in the area. One of our favourite tracks out at Bluff, B-Line has some fun drops but the lead in, is pretty technical and the second drop which is about 4 bike lengths after the first, is bit of gap hop so we had a chat with the club and decided Sandy Point would be a great spot for some practice drops. Not only that they were happy for us to restate some at Gravel Pit.

Screenshot 2020-05-24 at 3.04.30 PM.png

The sandy gravel will take a while to pack in and the landing is still really soft but hopefully it won’t take long before it’s really fun to practice on.

There two heights of drop, the lower one should roll, the second one - not so much. The second one you will need good drop technique to be successful.

ALine NZ - What's that all about?

ALine NZ - What's that all about?

If you're reading this...Congratulations you found us.

Get Stoked

This is great news for us because we have only just started and great news for you because we know our onions.

So what is ALine coaching?

ALine coaching is a group of passionate riders and coaches (UK Team included) who have dedicated their professional lives to helping riders become even more awesome. Our coaching roots come from Whistler Bike Park where JPJ was trained and trained instructors.

We coach with years of experience, study, dedication and knowledge. None of us ever had coaching and not many people out there have. Think about that for a minute. Horse riders, skiers, snow boarders, even Moto X - they all have a strong history of coaching/training. So why not mountain biking.

We are specialists in skill development. We analyse technique, identify strengths and weaknesses and then break techniques down into their component skills and build them back up again. This minimises risk and catalyses progression. Minimising risk through progression is something we are pretty hot on, and something close to our hearts.

If you're new to coaching then book in, take a chance. It might be a fun day out riding, it might change how you do a few things, it might transform your MTB experience completely.

Most of our clients are intermediate to advanced. If you can stand up on the pedals and coast comfortably, get up a curb and have ridden off road on different surfaces, you're probably closer to intermediate than you may think. If you're an advanced rider and have hit a glass ceiling, we can help unlock that next level.

Fire in any questions, always keen to help.
